[net.movies] mod.movies and other neglected mod.* groups

bch@ecsvax.UUCP (Byron C. Howes) (11/09/85)

About a year ago, a number of moderated newsgroups were created on an
experimental basis. Some of these groups were created on their own,
and some were created to run in parallel with an established unmoderated
counterpart.

Sadly, with the singular exception of mod.sources, those newgroups set up
as alternatives to an existing unmoderated group were an abject failure.
As moderator of one of them (mod.movies) I think its time to look at that
experiment and at the future of moderated groups as a whole.

On one hand, I am in agreement with those who think we should not have
a plethora of unused newsgroups. On the other I think that the future
of nontechnical newsgroups on usenet lies in moderated newsgroups. I
think it can be shown that the days of high volume high noise newsgroups
being distributed gratis are drawing to an end. Last years experiment
showed that it is unlikely that a moderated and unmoderated group on the
same subject can exist together.

With that in mind I would like to propose a discussion and vote on the
existance of mod.movies with the following alternatives:

	(1) mod.movies should be eliminated
	(2) mod.movies should be retained and net.movies eliminated.

Do not send flames to /dev/null. I am interested in what you have to say.

						In moderation,
