This is the single best haunted house movie ever to come out. I have it on tape; the name of the movie is "House on a Haunted Hill," based on the novel, "The Haunting of Hill House." It stars Julie Harris in one of her best acting roles. The movie has all the classic scenes, with the most haunted-looking house (viewed from outside or inside) that I have ever seen in a movie. This movie, made in the early 1960's, predates demons and ghoulies, but the ghosts are scary enough. The ghosts, incidentally, are never shown, except for a brief glimpse of a white blur at the end of the movie. My favourite line, which is typical of the eerie screenplay in the movie, is when the main character was warned, "Don't go into Hill House at night. The dead are not quiet at Hill House." I have seen this movie over and over since I was 8 years old. I never get tired of it. Although it no longer scares the wits out of me, I still feel this disconcerting chill come over me whenever they show the outside view of the house. Not a four-star movie, by most critics, but it's one of my favourites.
