[comp.lang.smalltalk] Review of Smalltalk Books

byerly@cars.rutgers.edu (Boyce Byerly ) (11/21/88)

A while back I posted a request for good smalltalk manuals. Here's a
summary of what I recieved from all you kind people out there:

Timothy Budd: A Little Smalltalk - This is the book I'm primarily
using right now. I apologize for my harsh opinion of this book
in my initial posting, as most of the problems are version
incompatibility problems. It's a good reference, though I prefer
larger examples of programs than it offers.

Goldberg and Robson: Smalltalk80: The Language and Implementation -
This book is recommended by many knowledgeable people.
I've only started it, but it looks pretty good.

Pinson & Wieners book, published by Addison-Wesley) is
recommended by Dick Peskin over at Rutgers CAIP center; he
describes it as "very good". He also notes that it "assumes
some level of computer sophistication". Dick Peskin is certainly
far more sophisticated than I am, but I would imagine that he means
that any experienced programmer who understands O-O programming to a
reasonable extent would can manage. I recently looked at this book,
and it looks quite good, though I only took a brief look.

Kahler & Patterson: "A Taste of Smalltalk" was also mentioned in
passing by some, but I gather the Pinson & Weiner book was
	preferred.
