[comp.lang.smalltalk] base reference

sarrel@wizard.cis.ohio-state.edu (Marc Sarrel) (05/23/89)

I am looking for a good basic reference on the object oriented ideas
behind smalltalk. This is tangentially related to the research I am
doing, but I would like to be able to reference an authoritative
source.

Please respond by email, I don't regularly read this group.

"Master, why is the letter 'i' the symbol for current?" "Because there is
no letter 'i' in the word 'current'." "Master, why do we use the letter
'j' for sqrt(-1)?" "Because we use the letter 'i' for current." Whereupon
the Master struck the Disciple, and the Disciple became enlightened.

While we are on the subject to references I would like to learn
more about PERSISTENT PROGRAMMING especially in the context of
Smalltalk and object-oriented programming. I have what appears
to be the definitive reference;

Atkinson, M. P., Buneman, P. & Morrison, K. (1988) Data types
and Persistence. Published by Springer

Anyone care to add to my list of one?

PS can you reply to me direct (as well) as I can't always
access this group.
