                             - ANNOUNCEMENT -
                          1989 OOPSLA Workshop
"The Bottom Line: Using OOP in the Commercial Environment"

On October 1, 1989, in conjunction with the ACM's OOPSLA 89 conference at
the Hyatt-Regency New Orleans, Louisiana, a workshop will be held on the
subject of using OOP in the commercial environment.

PURPOSE AND GOALS FOR WORKSHOP

Three years have passed since the first OOPSLA conference saw a panel
discussion on "Using OOP for Product Development". Now there is a basis
of experience which can address the issues seen when using OOP in a
non-research environment. The goals of this workshop will be:

1) To have those with experience using OOP to develop medium to large size
commercial programs (5+ S/W developers) enumerate the benefits that they
have realized and the problems they have encountered with the use of OOP.
2) To discuss the effect of OOP on the entire product lifecycle (from
design to maintenance) and on all the aspects involved (from software
   development to product marketing).
3) To explore how to maximize the benefits and minimize the problems in
   commercial application of the technique.
4) To establish a dialog among commercial users of OOP.
5) To provide a summary of the discussion for distribution to the attendees
and for inclusion in the addendum to the conference proceedings (if any).

PARTICIPANTS

We are looking for software product developers or managers who have completed
projects or who are currently involved in projects using OOP with teams of 5
or more people, or who are integrating OOP with a smaller number of people
into a larger system. Participants should be willing to talk about their
experiences and should have at least some experience with using OOP in a
commercial environment.

WORKSHOP FORMAT AND LENGTH

The proposed format is to have a limited number of participants make short
presentations about their experiences, followed by ample time for discussion
with other attendees. This format is intended to encourage discussion among
peers, rather than presentation by "experts". Alternate formats may be
explored depending on the response received. The workshop will be one day
in length.

POSITION PAPERS

Because of space restrictions, attendance must be limited. If you are
interested in participating, please submit a short (1-2 page) position
paper to the workshop organizer. The paper should indicate the status of
your experience with using OOP in the commercial environment and list the
benefits and/or costs you have seen or wish to discuss. Papers must be
received by Aug. 1, 1989. Participants will be selected and notified by
Sept. 1, 1989.
