Could someone suggest a good book or two as a starting point for learning Smalltalk? Also, are there any decent free versions of Smalltalk available which are suitable for a beginner to use to learn the language? I'd be interested in anything that runs either under MeSsyDOS or SCO XENIX 386. If you know of such a beastie, please let me know and how to get it. I recommend Smalltalk/V from Digitalk; it has a good manual and is well-implemented. The standard PC version costs less than $90 from mail order houses, though the 286 version is more expensive. -peter madany

I am currently trying (!) to "learn" Smalltalk via the Smalltalk/V package for the IBM-PC offered by Digitalk, Inc., and I was wondering if there are any other books or add-ins that could supplement this system and ease me over the "learning curve"? I suppose that sample program and applications would also be helpful.
