These people are used as propaganda tools to show to Russian people how bad the "WEST" is. In addition they would use him as propaganda tool for our Europian allies that people defect from US to Russia. Having Nikolai do the show would imply that hi returned home and he wants to stay there. Therefore, he doesn't have to be kept as a secret and western diplomats would not be able to talk to him. This way KGB would get a free favorable media attention and use him as favorable to them example. I think the movie is great except for the fact that he escapes that easily.
