I understand a dialect of smalltalk is available from FSF (Free Software Foundation) by ftp to prep.ai.mit.edu and is located in /pub/gnu. Is anyone out there working on bringing up smalltalk on a NeXT? I understand that Interactive Software Engineering is committed to a port of Eiffel to the NeXT. Wonder when ParcPlace is going to begin their port of smalltalk 80 to NeXT? -- Chuck Herrick cnh5730@calvin.tamu.edu

I've thought about it a bit. The bare GNUsmalltalk version compiles and runs fine on the NeXT, but without graphical interface of course. I don't think it would be too much trouble to put together the lowlevel requirements for the graphical support. A question: is there a public-domain version of the smalltalk code for the programming environment somewhere? I don't have the time to recreate the entire environment. Another issue with a NeXT port is that of interfacing Smalltalk with Objective-C. It would be cool if one could reference the Obj-C class library (with all the nifty NeXT user interface objects) from within Smalltalk. I imagine it could be done without *too* much work.... --bob Bob Olson University of Illinois at Urbana/Champaign Internet: rolson@uiuc.edu UUCP: {uunet|convex|pur-ee}!uiucdcs!olson UIUC NeXT Campus Consultant NeXT mail: olson@fazer.champaign.il.us "You can't win a game of chess with an action figure!"
