[comp.lang.smalltalk] Smalltalk Syntax

Hi,
 
I'm new to smalltalk -- still trying to read a smalltalk-80 book.
The only version I have access to is GNU smalltalk.
I tried reading some of the example smalltalk programs,
but guess what, I can't figure out the syntax!
Like what does '!' , '_' mean?
The book I have uses left arrows and up arrows, what is the ASCII
equivalent?

I hope somebody can help me by explaining the syntax of
smalltalk programs in ASCII files.
