DIGITAL DELIVERS ENHANCED Rdb/VMS INTEROPERABILITY, DATABASE
CONVERSION SERVICES AND OBJECT-ORIENTED PRODUCTS
Information Network is Digital's Strategic Database Direction
MAYNARD, Mass. -- November 5, 1990 -- Digital Equipment Corporation
today announced new products and services that extend and enhance
the functionality of Rdb/VMS -- its strategic relational database on
VMS. Included in the announcement were products that enhance Rdb/VMS
interoperability with other vendors' databases using Network
Application Support (NAS), services for migration to Rdb/VMS, and an
object-oriented database and object-oriented application development
system. At the same time, Digital also announced its strategic
database direction for the 1990s called the "Information Network".
"Digital delivers the most innovative, comprehensive and highest
quality set of application environment software in the world, and is
the only vendor with the resources and services to deliver software
solutions that can integrate our customers multivendor computing
environments", said David Stone, Vice President of Software
products.
"Partnering with customers and third-party software vendors enables
Digital to offer integrated solutions on an enterprise-wide basis so
our customers will prosper," Stone added.

Object-Oriented Products for Complex Applications
=================================================
Digital is at the forefront of object-oriented technology, which is
revolutionizing the computer programming and software world.
Object-oriented refers to the way software developers think about
and organize software. With object-oriented programming, programs
are written using reusable segments of code as though they were
standard parts -- rather than tediously writing code line-by-line.
The result has been a significant reduction in the time it takes to
write, modify, and maintain software applications.
As part of its Object-Oriented thrust, Digital announced the DEC
Trellis Object System -- a sophisticated object-oriented system for
application development. Trellis features a pure object-oriented language,
tools and compiler support for object-oriented programming of large,
complex applications. These types of applications tend to be difficult
to model using existing software development tools.
Examples of complex applications where Trellis is well-suited
include those applications that require significant data modeling
or complicated analysis such as electronic assembly in CAD,
portfolio management in financial segments, and CASE tools such as
design analysis. Trellis has an SQL type library, giving users the
ability to build applications on relational databases such as Rdb.
DEC Trellis will be available in December, 1990 with pricing set at
$5,000 per user/activity license.
Through a joint technology, marketing and reselling agreement with
Objectivity, Inc., Digital also announced Objectivity/DB, a
high-performance, object-oriented database management system that
combines database technology with object-oriented concepts.
Objectivity/DB's fully distributed architecture provides full and
transparent distribution of data and control to the user.
Objectivity/DB, a portable product developed for the open systems
market, will be available in January, 1991 for the VAX/VMS,
VAX/ULTRIX and RISC/ULTRIX platforms. Objectivity/DB is well-suited
for electrical computer-aided design (ECAD), mechanical computer-aided
design (MCAD), certain applications in computer integrated manufacturing
(CIM), laboratory sciences, computer-aided software engineering, (CASE)
and computer-aided publishing (CAP). Objectivity/DB is priced at $3,000
to $25,000 and will be available in December, 1990.
