[comp.lang.smalltalk] Interface Builder Summary

danr@autodesk.com (Dan Rosenfeld) (12/08/90)

Several people requested that I post the replies I received regarding
Smalltalk interface builders. The following is a summary of what I
received:

Inside Smalltalk
----------------

Several people mentioned that the recently released book "Inside
Smalltalk II" describe a "Window Maker" program. Apparently it
includes code listings. (Carmelo Interone
[csq003@umaxc.weeg.uiowa.edu] wants to know if anyone this code
on-line.) It works for Smalltalk-80 Version 2.x.

Widgets
-------
Widgets from Acumen Software received uniformly positive 'reviews'.
they seem to have a version available for Smalltalk V/286, with a
V/Mac version soon to come.

    From: cohill@vtserf.cc.vt.edu (Andrew M. Cohill)
"Widgets has an interface editor, Dialog classes a la V/Mac, and a ton of
new classes that implement a graphical interface, including buttons,
palettes, list boxes, menu bars, panes, windows, gauges and sliders, and
     pull down menus."

    From: uunet!extro.ucc.su.OZ.AU!objtch (Peter Goodall)
"There is one superb interface builder which is currently available for
     Smalltalk/V286 - Widgets from Acumen.

Everyone I have reccomended it to has been xxx delighted. I am trying to
get enough people together to influence them to do a similar system for
Smalltalk/VPM,/Windows. I believe that there will be a version
     for Smalltalk/MAC soon."

    From: uunet!relay.EU.net!media01!rzo (Rob Zomerdijk)
"It is nice, good-looks and has very little bugs."

    From: uunet!relay.EU.net!media01!mno (Mark Nouwen)
"This product gives you a new interface for Smalltalk V286 and also a
interface builder. We have bought it ourself and are using it in one of
our products. You can compare the new interface with the three D look of
windows 3.0. It really is very nice.

(Digitalk should include it in there standard V286.)"

    From: uunet!relay.EU.net!media01!pkr (Peter Kriens)
"There is a very nice interface builder which really takes advatage
    of the Smalltalk facilities ...

It allows you to edit the human interface part of an application
class. It has a nice 3d look and works in color. It is based
on the same framework as X-windows. It really looks very sexy
and is easy to use. A very nice thing of the package is the fact
that it allows you to edit the interface while you are debugging.
It is not a one way street, like many interface builders."

The list price for Widgets/V 286 is $149.95.

Tigre
-----
Also mentioned was Tigre from Tigre Object Systems. In their own
words; "the Interface Designer, a full-color, machine independant
Interface Builder for Smalltalk" (from a call for Job applications
they posted) Seems to run on Smalltalk-80. Price is apparently $3500
per machine.

    From: benson@blake.u.washington.edu (Dan Benson)
"A great looking 'Interface Builder' for Smalltalk-80 was demonstrated
at the 1990 OOPSLA in Ottawa. It's called Tigre. I understand it
is designed to work with Smalltalk-80 Release 4.0 (with color)."

Others
------
Two other interface builders were mentioned:

    From: uunet!extro.ucc.su.OZ.AU!objtch (Peter Goodall)
"There is one other I know of that could be good - Facets which is
a co-development between ServioLogic Corporation and ParcPlace Systems
for Smalltlak-80. It is also the interface builder for Servio's OODB
    Gemstone.

    Try mailing sales@parcplace.com"

    From: Ralph Johnson <johnson@cs.uiuc.edu>
"Knowledge Systems Corporation has a nice one, but you have
to be one of their consulting customers to get it, you can't
just order it though the mail."
