[comp.lang.smalltalk] Smalltalk/V for Windows

taylord@Software.Mitel.COM (Don Taylor) (01/25/91)

I recently received a letter from Digitalk offering me a special deal on
ST/V for Windows - $250 + $20(sic) P&H. The problem is that the offer
expires at the end of February and as far as I can tell they have not
started shipping the product yet. I would really like to hear from
anyone who has used it before putting my money down - I am sure that
there are others in this situation. So, anyone out there got a copy?
If so, then please post your observations for the rest of us.

I do have a few specific questions:

1) The letter does not say if the Windows SDK is a pre-requisite. Is
it?

2) How much memory do I need? I remember a beta tester talking about
4mb., is that true? Actually this is a two part question:. how much
memory for the full environment, and how much memory for an application
that has been stripped? (I realize that this is a 'piece of string'
question).

3) Is the class library any bigger/better than ST/V286 (apart from the
Windows code)? Digitalk claimed in one of their newsletters that they
had bought the rights to PP classes, does this show yet?

4) Just what doc. do you get for $20? Same as STV/286? Seems to me
that $20 should buy an awful lot of stamps and paper :-).

5) When I received my STV/286 kit on a similar offer, the manuals were
pre-release and they would not give me a proper set. Are the manuals
shipping with STV/Windows production quality?

6) What is performance like (cf. to other Windows app.s)?

7) It seems to me that Actor and STV/Windows are now direct competitors.
If you were starting from ground zero, which would you go with, and why?
My potential application is to use Actor or ST to manage the GUI, and a
C DLL for the meat (ie. easy part). I hope that the performance of
Actor or ST is good enough (including on 286's) that I don't have to
re-implement the GUI code in C. Any comments?

Thanks, Don.
