A few people have referred recently to the outrageously high price of Smalltalk-80 from ParcPlace Systems: $3500, on Suns, Macs and '386 machines! But wait - there is relief (of a sort): ParcPlace have told me that they're going to make available 'evaluation kits' for St-80 on any of these platforms, for $200. Apparently the only difference between an evaluation kit and the Real Thing is that you can't save the image. Of course, this is a great inconvenience - but you can still file out code, so it's not deadly, especially if you just want to have a close look at St-80 before shelling out (or getting your boss to shell out :^) 3.5 grand. Note also that PPS sells St-80 to academic types for $350 on any platform. (So you could open a branch campus of the University of South North Dakota...) If anyone looks into evaluation kits more closely, please post your findings. - rick -- Rick Cameron ...uunet!van-bc!mdivax1!cameron Mobile Data Intl voice: +1 604 277 1511 11411 No. 5 Road fax: +1 604 277 2178 Richmond, BC

First of all, they've got to be kidding about $350 bucks. Thanks for the concern Mr. Big Shot Software Company. (That was an attempt at humor, alluding to the modest income of Grad Students. I don't want to start another flame war about pricing. Pleease!) Second, this would be a great deal for the project I'm working on, since the only way we can work on department computers is to file everything we do out at the end of each session. Seems they run out of disk space really fast if you keep smalltalk images laying around. -- Kent Williams --- williams@umaxc.weeg.uiowa.edu "'Is this heaven?' --- 'No, this is Iowa'" - from the movie "Field of Dreams" "This isn't heaven, ... this is Cleveland" - Harry Allard, in "The Stupids Die"
