[comp.lang.smalltalk] Looking for Smalltalk sources/hacks/"goodies" FTP archive in the U.S.

poto@athena.mit.edu (Jose' J. Capo') (04/03/91)

I am looking for an archive of Smalltalk sources/hacks/"goodies"
available through anonymous FTP on the Internet. I have looked right
and left (looked at the ftp.list in pilot.njin.net), to no avail.

I have been reading comp.lang.smalltalk for the recent past and have
seen similar requests but no responses. I have seen something about
the Manchester archive and presume this refers to some machine in the
UK.

I know this gets asked often, but I have seen no Frequently Asked
Questions postings with this information.

I use Digitalk's Smalltalk/V and would also like to hear whether their
"goodies" packages are worth the price. I will summarize responses I
receive through e-mail.

Thank you,

The Typed Smalltalk Group here at the University of Illinois
is in the process of setting up an archive dedicated to
	Smalltalk code.

Yes, there is an email based server in Manchester.
We are in the process of arranging to echo their
entire Smalltalk archive. (and they will echo ours.)

Our archive is on the machine st.cs.uiuc.edu
[For those with older ftp software, the name ]
[st.cs.uiuc.edu is currently an alias for speedy.cs.uiuc.edu]
     [speedy.cs.uiuc.edu is currently located at 128.174.241.10 ]

To access our STILL UNDER CONSTRUCTION archive.

	Via anonymous ftp:	`ftp st.cs.uiuc.edu`

If you can NOT use anonymous ftp, there is also an email based
server of the same archive. To get the "help" file, and a
uuencoded copy of a compressed recursive directory listing
	of the entire archive send:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
To: archive-server@st.cs.uiuc.edu
Subject:

path your@internet.address.here.please
help
encodedsend ls-lR.Z
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
IMPORTANT! Your PATH line should be an INTERNET address.
	However, our mailer does understand:
		user@host.BITNET
		user%somesite.UUCP@uunet.uu.net
		user%somesite.UUCP%viasite.UUCP@uunet.uu.net
		user@host.CSNET
If you omit the PATH line, our server will still attempt
to reply to your message. However, an explicit path
is usually much safer. Especially for BITNET sites.

If you need a busy graduate student, instead of the
archive-server shell scripts, send your message
	to archive-request@st.cs.uiuc.edu which is currently
	an alias for voss@cs.uiuc.edu.

A more official "grand opening" type announcement
will be posted to comp.lang.smalltalk when the
	archive is officially online.
