Madonna's next movie is "Shanghai Surprise". Her co-star is husband Sean Penn. Filming begins this week (which is why Madonna will be appearing by satellite from Hong Kong for the American Music Awards show on Monday January 27) in Hong Kong and Macao. Supposed to be a comedy. Written by Jim Kouf and David Greenwalt. Directed by Jim Goddard. December release from Metro Goldwyn Mayer.

A correction: "Shanghai Surprise" writers are John Kohn and Robert Bentley. Also in the cast: Richard Griffith, Bernard Hill and Phillip Sayer. Executive Producers are George Harrison (yes, that one) and Denis O'Brien.

Those of us who live in the Village have, of course, seen Madonna's FIRST film, an 8 mm East Village Next Wave sort of thing called "A Certain Sacrifice," a vaguely X-rated basement movie made years before she was anything more than an aspiring would-be. Worth seeing (plays midnights at the Eighth Street Playhouse, just off Sixth Avenue, Tuesday nights) if you're in NYC and are for whatever reason a fan of hers.
