... What with all of the recent _Brazil_ postings I'd like to brave the flames and mention a thing or two... I found it interesting to compare _Brazil_ and _Kiss of the Spider Woman_. Now, now, now! Don't post a "how stupid" response yet. In both movies we are presented with two characters that are quite opposed at the start but grow together as the movie progresses. _Spider Woman_ presents two prisoners trapped in a country ruled by a brutal and corrupt government, _Brazil_ presents two characters (Sam and the woman he is in love with) living and effectively "trapped in" a society that is equally cruel. Both pairs of characters consist of two imcomplete characters; they need their other halves to be whole. These pairs of characters grow closer (and finally join) as they evolve into more complete (advanced?) people. Physical and mental suffering as well as growth of "love" between the characters is important as they are transformed. In addition (on a lighter level...) both movies have fantasy segments that run throughout the movies. In _Spider Woman_ there are the movie segments and in _Brazil_, Sam's dream is threaded through the "reality" of the main plot. The contents of the dream and movie segments are interesting too but this is getting too long. Finally, the endings are very similar. In both cases, the remaining half of the character pair (the other half is dead already) is being tortured physically but is able to escape through fantasy. I got the same "satisfied but not happy" feeling from both endings. OK, now if you still want to post a "how stupid" reply, please direct it to me via E-mail. I doubt there is sufficient interest to continue this on the net. Thanks for listening... -jj ARPA: jones@hopkins BITNET: L64A0110@jhuvm UUCP: inhp4!whuxcc!jhunix!ecf_ujaj
