I have been thinking for the past few months that I want to have real multitasking on my PC. I considered OS/2, but gaveup that as an option because of the cost of the OS in $$ and memory, and the additional cost to be able to have the programming tools. So I am now considering Unix as an option. I am aware of two major contenders in the Unix market, SCO Xenix, and Microport. 1. What other companies would be major contenders? 2. How well do the implementations of MS-DOS under Unix work? 3. Are all of these systems AT&T Sys V? I work at a Berkeley 4.3 campus. 4. How well do the compilers supplied with the system work? 5. What compilers are supplied? C, Fortran, Pascal... 6. What is your minimum configuration? 2Mb kernel 15-20Mb disk partition for Unix stuff? 7. How difficult will it be for a novice to learn and maintain the system? Well, these should do for starters. Please keep your responses to E-Mail, there is too much trafic in this group already. Thanks, William Murphy murphy@newton.physics.purdue.edu
