[net.movies] Maid character in Hannah & her sisters.

On several occasions there is a black maid character shown in
the movie. It looks like she had some role that was edited out,
because what's left of her appearances is too much to be just a
sign of the family's opulence, and too little to have any 
relevance to the story.
Did I miss something, or was it other people's impression too?
