[net.movies] The next voice you don't hear...

Actually, the title of your posting reminds me of a movie that might
count. It was called, if I remember correctly, ``The Next Voice You
Hear''. The premise is that the Voice of God starts being heard on
the radio every day at the same time. Although the (other?)
characters in the movie hear the voice, the audience never does, since
the radio broadcasts are only heard off-screen.

***SPOILER WARNING***

Actually, it's more complicated than that. For six days, the
broadcasts are heard off-screen. On the seventh day, in the climactic
scene of the movie, all the characters are gathered to hear the Voice
of God together but there is only silence at the appointed time. The
regular radio announcer comes on and announces that it seems that,
since it is the seventh day, God has decided to rest, just as at the
creation.

***End SPOILER WARNING***

Your mentioning of a Disney film, plus the non-specific aspect of the question
( Alan says only "main character", not actor/actress) prompts all kinds of
titles, like; "Old Yeller", "Charlie the Lonesome Cougar", "Beaver Valley",
"Clarence the Cross-eyed Lion", etc. Then there's Lassie (wasn't that a
movie?), The Flipper movies and show, "Gentle Ben", more etc.

More along the line of what Alan was looking for, I think:

The french film maker Jaques Tati (sp.?) I consider a comic genius and
visual wizard. He portrays different characters in each of his films
but none of them have spoken as far as I recall. This gives them almost
universal appeal, for although most of the other actors speak in french,
it is absolutely not neccessary to know what they are saying to enjoy
the film.

Some of his films are: "Mr. Hulot's Holiday", "Traffic", "My Uncle".

Dave

P.S. If I'm wrong about him speaking in any of these films, someone
please correct me.

I'm surprised that other people haven't answered this question yet (at
least I haven't seen an answer). The only person to speak in _Silent Movie_
is Marcelle Marcoux (sp?). Mel Brooks (and Marty Feldman?) call M.M.
on the phone to ask him if he wants to be in the silent movie they are
 making and he says "No!".
