I am trying to put together plans for another USENIX C++ event next fall.
I would like to find a way to combine a workshop and a conference
with tutorials. The workshop portion would be small, say 50 people,
restricted to past and present speakers on C++ and those who have
published something on C++, and would be primarily a forum for
discussion. Possible scenarios:
Plan A: Plan B: Plan C: Plan D:
--------- --------- --------- ---------
mon tutorials tutorials
tue tutorials tutorials / workshop tutorials tutorials
wed conference conference tutorials tutorials / workshop
thu conference conference conference conference
fri workshop conference conference
sat workshop
Workshop following the conference:
advantage:
since the conference will be over, all of those papers
will have already been presented, so we can have one or
more discussion periods. with everything on the table.
disadvantage:
conference attendees, once there, will want to hang around
for the workshop even though they weren't invited.
Workshop on Saturday
advantage:
Less of a problem for non-invitees.
disadvantage:
Some won't want to work on Saturday.
Workshop preceding the conference:
advantage:
many of the non-invitees will be in tutorials
disadvantage:
some invitees will be giving tutorials.
We're thinking of Denver, New Orleans, San Antonio, Orlando,
Nashville, or Cincinatti. Dates would be in September or November.
For a conference of the size that I expect (300-700), we have to
move very soon, and still, we may have to take whatever is available.
If the workshop/conference combo seems unworkable, then we'll
talk about a separate workshop at another date.
If you would like to tell me what you think about these plans,
please reply, preferably using an address ending in "usenix!grand!day".
Thanks.
