Hello, out there! I recently returned from Australia to find out that I
can now talk to the world...this is my first article, so bear with me if
I violate any unwritten laws.
I was especially pleased to see some deadheads on the net; it opens myriad
new possibilities for the exchange of information, trading tapes, etc.
This past weekend I flew down to Berkeley for a "fix", and was it ever good
stuff! First I'll give the songlists, then a short comment on each show.

Comment (Friday): What can I say? Dark Star blew everyone away, with two
giant screens behind the band flashing images of the universe during the song.
After some problems with the sound during the early part of the first set, the
rest of the show was close to perfect.
Comment (Saturday): This show seemed to me to be a turning point in the long-
rumoured dispute between Bob and Jerry over showmanship vs. musicianship. Bob
was noticeably toned down during Estimated Prophet, and from that point on they
seemed to take great pains to play as a *band*. Even the lyrics to the second
half of the second set seemed to reaffirm that they are ready to get out of the
rut (being very predictable, etc.) they have grown into over the past few years
leaving me feeling very positive about the future.
Comment (Sunday): Some real surprises here for me, as I hadn't heard the song
lists from the last couple of months. Phil was in top form singing lead on
Why Don't We Do It In The Road?, improvising the last verse as "why don't we
do it on the drums?". I particularly noticed Jerry and Bob looking at each
other a lot more, giving cues, etc. which to me confirmed what I had felt the
previous night. If anyone else out there saw the shows, I'd love to get your
comments by email.
This is running a little long, but I'd like to mention one last thing before I
sign off. I have tapes of all three Greek shows (1st generation), as well as
about 180 others (mostly newer, but going back to 1966). I'd be happy to send
my list (which resides here on our VAX) to anyone who has tapes to trade. Hope
to hear from you soon!
Gratefully Deadicated,
Bill Hanot
