The Experimental Systems Project (ES-Kit) at the Microelectronics and Computer Technology Corporation (MCC) in Austin, Texas, is seeking graduate students interested in a full-time internship with the project during the spring and summer of 1989. The project offers a number of interesting opportunities for work in state-of-the-art hardware and software technologies; several graduate students have based their continuing academic research on ES-Kit related assignments. The ES-Kit project is conducting DARPA-sponsored research to develop and integrate enabling technologies for rapid prototyping of hardware and software for experimental computer architectures. The project is primarily interested in candidates to fill an intership in the areas of SYSTEM SOFTWARE and/or COMPILER DEVELOPMENT. The ES-Kit system software is being designed to provide a medium grained, object- oriented application and experiment environment for heterogeneous, multi-node architectures. The system and applications softwares are written in C++ and compiled with the GNU C++ compiler, developed and distributed by the Free Software Foundation. The compiler is a state of the art optimizing, native code compiler and includes several extensions to support transparent messaging for the ES-Kit programmer. Interns work under the direction of a permanent project staff member but are expected to be capable of highly productive, largely independent work. The working environment is top-class, supported with a large number of Sun3/50 and Sun3/60 workstations, and a 16-node Ametek 2010. Custom ES-Kit hardware, based on the Motorola 88000 RISC architecture will be available for integration during the spring of 1989. The internship is a full-time position beginning as early as possible in January, 1989 and continuing through late summer. In the past, graduate interns have been responsible for their own residence, transportation and medical insurance, however, the salary rate is more than sufficient to meet these obligations. MCC also provides some relocation assistance to and from Austin. Interested students must be able to take an eight month leave from their universities, although they may periodically return to take qualifying examinations, etc., at their own expense. Candidates must be U.S. citizens or have a visa status which will allow them to be directly hired by MCC (e.g., a "practical training" period). MCC is an equal opportunity employer. Resumes should be sent (electronic mail is preferable) to: K. Stuart Smith MCC/Experimental Systems Project 3500 West Balcones Center Drive Austin, Texas 78759 (512) 338-3314 E-mail: kss@mcc.com Resumes must include three academic and/or professional references. All resumes received will be acknowledged.
