[tune of "Fie On Goodness"]

PLEASE DON'T SAY "SCI-FI!"

copyright 1981, by Arlan Keith Andrews, Sr.

Please don't say sci fic!
Please don't say sci fi!
When you mean to speak of science fiction
And you want to rate as a fan in the world's eye
If you mean to speak with true conviction
Never say sci fi!
Never say sci fi!

NEVER say sci fi!
Not EVER say sci fi!
If you have just arrived in science fiction
A neofan, with head up in the sky
Be sure to practice up your fannish diction
And don't say sci fic
 Don't say sci fi!

Never say sci fi
when plain "SF" will do
And all the true fen they will adore you
It's just that way, don't bother asking why
And if their conversations start to bore you
Just look in their eyes, no matter their size, saying
Pleas don't say SCI FI! FIE! FI! FI!

EXCUSE above this is first submittal on net.
Regarding the FILKSONGS I like them amd encourge the author to post more.
As to SCI FI I'm not proud long live SCI-FI. Science fiction is after all
escapeism why try to make it what its not.

I'd like to point out to those on the net who may not know that
there is an entire 'sub-culture' running around on this globe, calling itself
'Science-Fiction Fandom'. As with any group, I would spend most of the night
describing the social activities and conventions that define this as a 'group';
but in particular, there is a widespread dislike by 'fans' (in the parlance of
SF Fandom, the plural of 'fan' is 'fen'...I'm getting to this.) to the phrase
'Sci-Fi'. In some cases, this is snobbishness, others, it's a dislike of a
label often pinned on willy-nilly by the popular media, etc. THAT'S what the
song is refering to.

Bits and pieces from the parlance and customs of SF Fandom:

That amber liquid is
'bheer', not beer; your favorite Supreme Being (you know, the one that isn't
ENTIRELY dim) becomes Ghod. In general, you could see anything pick up a
silent 'h', but these two seem to catch it all the time.

When you hear someone speak of 'corflu', don't run for shots; they're referring
to 'correction fluid', a staple of many fanzines.

A fanzine is a sort of paper-based netnews. Use of corflu almost mandatory.

A 'neo' is a neo-fan, a newcomer to fandom. Often noted drunken in the
consuite ogling the lady wearing only some sort of negligible slinky.

If I have to define slinky, you're not human.

Fans hold parties at hotels known as 'cons', for 'conventions'. Many have
themes; many don't, also. All have all-nite howling at the moon, drinking,
singing, etc. Often costumes are worn, for the hell of it. One of the
things neofen must learn early on is that the lady in the slinky is not
necessarily advertising. One of the things neofen must learn early on is
that the lady in the slinky may well be advertising. Be cool.

Anyway, enough for now. If anyone wants more elaboration, let me
know; as I said, there's a lot here...
