I recently received the C++ "Selected Readings" book that I ordered way back when. AT&T should *seriously* consider better production for this and similar books: 1. The book is too wide to read comfortably. This is important. 2. The formatting is primitive. The last line on many pages is often something like "... as shown in the following." and then you have to turn the page. Or, take the section titles on pages 1-22 and 1-23 ... in one the keyword Static is capitalized while in the other the keyword const is lower case. The page headings don't have section names. Footnotes are at the end of each chapter. 3. The binding is a pitiful wire strap. The cover is lightweight -- suitable only for airmail! The cutout in the cover doesn't line up with the title on the first page. The paper stock is mediocre. 4. The printing in my copy is smeared, as if it were photocopied several times. Adjacent letters *often* touch, especially in italic and monospace. I've seen photocopied manuals that were crisper and easier to read. 5. The index is pitiful. 2 pages for a several hundred page book. AT&T ought to be able to do much better. Kaare Christian kc@rna.rockefeller.edu
