  When Brazil was shutting down the main computer, he swept that sort of 
dimensional hole (I don't recall what it was.) across as many planets as
he could in the length of time he had free to do this.  If I recall correctly
the book specificly says that he swept up only a small portion of possible
races.  His intention was to preserve as many of the races created by the
Markovians as possible.  He clearly didn't succeed!  He didn't even hit
all the worlds inhabited by the races he DID save!  So, untold numbers of
beings simply ceased to exist.  I don't know if I'd consider this along with
wasting Alderaan, though.  When the computer shut down, the reality containing
those beings ceased to exist, and in fact, was as if it had never been!
Ah! now we get into philosophy, at which point I will leave this.
