[comp.lang.c++] ANSI C++ Draft

cornish@mickey.slcs.slb.com (Darryl Cornish) (05/30/90)

I would like to get my hands on a copy of the ANSI C++ Draft which is in
the works.

Is this possible? If so, who would one contact? If not, does anyone have
a list of the members of the committe (e-mail addresses would be nice)?

Thanks.

The X3J16 committee was only formed late last year; there has been
only one technical meeting so far. It will be some time before a
draft proposed standard for C++ is written.

You might be thinking of one of the base documents the committee
is going to use - the AT&T C++ Language System Release 2.1 Product
Reference Manual. Presumably it can be ordered from AT&T - the
select code is 307-159. But it should not be construed that this
document represents an early draft of the standard.

That manual, plus some updates and LARGE amounts of commentary,
will also soon be available as a book:

	The Annotated C++ Reference Manual
	by Margaret Ellis and Bjarne Stroustrup
	(Addison-Wesley, 1990)

Those of you who are going to the Anaheim Usenix conference may
get a chance to look through a copy there.

I don't think the ANSI committee (X3J16) has an official draft yet,
but the closest thing to it is the AT&T C++ Release 2.1 Reference
Manual. It is available from AT&T (dial 1-800-828-UNIX) as Select Code
307-159. Alternatively you could get "The Annotated C++ Reference
Manual," by M. A. Ellis and B. Stroustrup, published by Addison-
Wesley. It contains the entire text of the reference manual (with only
slight editorial changes) along with about an equal amount of
explanation and commentary. The annotation part is in a special
font, so you can tell what's Reference Manual and what isn't.

I assume future drafts will be available from X3. When such a draft
exists and is available, you'll read about it here!

I don't feel free to post a list of the members of the committee (:-)>),
but I am AT&T's principal representative and expect to be the editor of
the Standard.
