[net.music] Snobs & other Elites

The talk about snobs, preferring mediocrity, etc., reminds me of an
erstwhile dean of a Letters & Science School in a certain university
(with  Letters  instead of  Arts  to accomodate a school containing
 Communication Arts  and  Fine Arts ).  The dean was proposing and
and backing an honors program.  A faculty member, who may have been
expressing a majority opinion, said "But isn't that elitism?"  "My
God," said the dean, "I hope so."  Of course, he's no longer dean.
