While talking with some Australian friends this last week, I was informed that Fizzgig is a word from Down Under, meaning a mythical monster from the outback. [This, while munching on a vegemite sandwich...] --arlan andrews, abi, indy

Nonsense. It means (1) "face" (a corruption of "physiognomy"; also "phiz"), and (2) "a flighty girl". The mythical outback monster is a bunyip. Graeme Hirst (Australian), Brown University, Computer Science ...!{decvax, vax135}!bruinix!gh

NEVERTHELESS--The Austraaalians I met said Fizzgig meant a mythical monster in the outback. Bunyip was another variety of boogie man, as was the yowie. The draftswoman who told me had spent years living in tents in the mining areas. Perhaps slang and usage varies. My brother's sailboat/home in Port Neches, TX, is guarded by a Bunyip, by the way--a fierce chow dog. Let's hear it from all the other wowsers out there. --arlan; abi/indy
