[net.sf-lovers] Sexism in the land of Xanth

rick (02/06/83)

For those who are wondering just *how* sexist Piers Anthony's Xanth
novels really are, consider the following quote from his latest,
Night Mare:

"Women don't really want all the things they long for. All
they really want is to long and be longed for."

Used (as usual) without permission (forgive me...).

Having read the previous Xanth novels, I refuse to read Night Mare
on the grounds that it might have a bad effect on my marriage.
Piers is unabashedly sexist in ALL his novels. I don't read any
of his works anymore.

Actually, NIGHT MARE is the *LEAST* sexist of that series. In it,
Anthony tries to come to grips with the deliberate sexism in the
other stories; the ending is, for Xanth, rather surprising (though
perhaps not unexpected given the trend he established in OGRE, OGRE).

It's well worth reading, but then I'm an Anthony fan.

BTW, is anyone else of the opinion that Anthony's emphatic sexism in
the Xanth novels is deliberately over-stated in order to make a (subtle)
point about our society? I'm of two minds myself, but I know someone
who feels strongly that the sexism is a deliberate put-on. Any ideas?
