[net.sf-lovers] Ellison Wonderland

robin (03/27/83)

Good day!
Y'know I am really getting tired of hearing about Heinlein and Farmer and
those other old sf writers whose time has passed. Why don't we hear anything
about some REAL writers, for example, Harlan Ellison(though he really is nor
(excuse me, not) a sf writer, he just writes sf stories)? I happen to be of
that group of people who like Ellison, so maybe we can get an argument going
with those who think that he is not so great.

Let's see what we can get going,

                                               Allan F. Perry

I recently purchased a rather bizarre record album
by Harlan Ellison. He reads "Shatterday" and
	"Repent, Harlequin".

I always liked to read Ellison; hearing him read his
own work aloud is marvelous! I reccommend the record
highly. It is sometimes available from the Science
	Fiction Book Club.

Has anyone out there bought similar recordings? I
notice that there is a recording of Asimov reading
	excerpts from "Nightfall"...

You wanted an argument, so here it is, but not for the reasons
you think you'll get...
Ellison writes good stuff (sometimes), so I won't start a battle
over that. BUT, I will no longer read it because the man himself is such
an ass! After having heard the man once and having read an in-depth interview
he gave, I refused to give my dollars to a man "for entertainment purposes"
(which is why any of us buys a science fiction/fiction/fantasy book) who
insists that MOST ALL OF US ARE LITTLE BETTER THAN LOWER MIDDLE CLASS
MORONS!!! Ellison knocks everyone else's books and movies and the people
who read or watch them. He is self-righteous about writing, feeling him-
self to be free from any guilt or sin while he berates his peers and
calls their readers idiots. I refuse any support for his cause.
This, of course, is a personal opinion and in no way reflects the
views or opinions of my co-workers or the company I work for.

Hhes e's my absolute favourite...for a good lesson in love and pain, read
"NKL`Love Ain't Nothing But Sex Misspelled" -- it proves the popposite of the
title, and it is so beautiful. I'm working on getting the records,

I became an instant Ellison convert after reading DEATHBIRD STORIES.
