Try the Data Light C compiler. It has gotten very good reviews from
Dr. Dobbs and PC Tech Journal. (I can't remember the issue numbers now
but I read them before I got my DL C) Data Light just started selling
an optimized version of their compiler for $100 and the version with all
memory models and source is only about $80. I have had very good success
porting most of the code from the MS Dos environment to the Unix environment
so it seems to fairly compatable. I feel it is an easy compiler even for
a novice to get along with. As far as an interperter I would try Instant C.
I used it in a C class at Cal Tech and I felt it was OK. I would go for the
compiler though just because I think that is the environment that you will
be shooting for and, as long as it is not too hard, that is the environment
you should start in.
