[comp.lang.c] Follow-up: Emacs for MS-DOS

dsill@NSWC-OAS.arpa (Dave Sill) (06/24/87)

First, I'd like to thank all who replied to my query for MS-DOS emacs
recommendations.

I received a total of seven replies. Three strongly recommended Epsilon
from Lugaru (about $150) citing its speed, features, and concurrent
subprocesses. The only other commercial Emacs mentioned was Brief,
but the person who mentioned it had never used it.

Among the free Emacses, micro-Emacs received four recommendations.
The latest versions can handle 43-line EGA displays, large (how
large?) files, and macros.

Jove was mentioned twice: once favorably and once unfavorably (too
slow).

Freemacs was mentioned twice also. Both seemed to have experienced
the same difficulties I did with lack of documentation.

I went and grabbed a copy of bigemacs from simtel20
(pd:[msdos.text-editor]bigemacs.arc and bigemacs.hlp) and have been
pretty satisfied with it. It will certainly suffice until I can
procure a copy of Epsilon.

Thanks again,

Dave Sill
