The NeXT workstation, to be announced any year now, has a DSP in it which I have been lead to believe is a DSP56000. Julius Smith, formerly of Stanford CCRMA, is at NeXT, presumably doing music stuff. My understanding is that the DSP is used for: Music & sound high speed built in modem (for free!) high speed numeric computation your dreams (quickly) The machine will come with a C compiler for the 56000 so you can (for example) do compute intensive C work on the DSP. Most of this has been pieced together from various informal sources. I am a student normally and quite clearly respresent only my own views. Mike Rutenberg Reed College
