which is exactly correct. this explains the compiler warning.  And 
the reason that the execution of program just resulted in the return to 
the prompt is so simple I hate to admit!  What was happening was that
I called the executable file "test" and as every body knows (I do too!)
test is a shell built in command.
	It must have been late at night or something!!!
