Good Morning. I've decided to take a new tack to things. Rather than flaming and foaming at the mouth about whether we appreciate music because we don't ever have to finger it correctly (talk about projection!), I will present a positive alternative for us all.... THE USENET COMPILATION TAPE!!!! Yes, yes, you heard it here. WHat would all you budding participants think of the possibility of actually *hearing* Michael Ellis thrash in the privacy of his own garage....to actually have Karl Malik perform on your own Walkman? Actually, the idea is my wife's originally. My little indie tape label has just finished a compilation of Ithaca-area new music (everything from technopop to minimalist dancefunk to digital gamelan), and we're pretty happy with the results. The logistics of putting such a project together have been a bit crazy, but it is worth it. We were sitting around the other day remarking on how every once in a while, someone posts who's busy doing stuff or composing, and Jolanda wondered if it might not be much easier to work on such a project here, where there's presumably a wide variety of work (as wide as the people), and an opportunity to practice a little musical democracy (that is, something with *variety*). I think that with a little imagination, we can probably patch together a way to make such a collection of music available to ennyone at a minimal sort of cost (say, the cost of the tape and printing of the notes and perhaps a snappy insert). In fact, there *might* even be some golden ear types in net.audio with those wonderful high-speed or dubbing decks that could be prevailed upon to make copies of the stuff. The more I think about this, the more intriguing the idea sounds. If any of you think it would be a good idea, send me a not [USE MAIL< NOT THE NEWSGROUP] and we'll talk about it.... g(regional zeal, decentralized travail)taylor Cultural Attache at the Walkman Consulate ________________________________________________________________________________ If you ask me, I may tell you gtaylor@cornell it's been this way for years Gregory Taylor I play my red guitar....
