[comp.lang.c] GROK THIS, you turkeys!!!

duke@skipper.dfrf.nasa.gov (Lee Duke x3802) (12/05/88)

I have just read all the responses to GROK THIS, and I find it all pretty
amazing. There seems to be an underlying assumption that science fiction
is of such social, technological, and philosophical importance that everyone
should be familiar with it.

The idea that the word 'Grok' was common in the sixties also amazes me. I
spent most of the sixties in San Francisco and Berkeley and I never heard the
word before. But then, I don't have much time for science fiction or a lot
of the crowd that seems to collect around it.

Maybe it's the aftereffect of the drugs. I keep thinking that I've heard all
these arguments before. I still remember when programmers were supposed to be
god-like gurus; now that eleven year olds are cracking UNIX systems, I suppose
we should respect system admistrators as gurus. Or maybe eleven year old kids.

Sorry about posting this on comp.lang.c, but it seemed appropriate in this
case.
