[comp.lang.c] TurboC 2.0 vs. TurboC Professional

pete@northstar89.dartmouth.edu (Peter Schmitt) (07/24/89)

I would like to purchase TurboC and began pricing it by looking first
in Computer Shopper. I found TurboC 2.0 for as low as $85, but the
ad also listed TurboC Professional for $159.

What is the difference (besides price) between these two products.
Why would I want or need one over the other.

The difference is that the Professional package includes TASM (Borland's
assembler-MASM compatible) and the Turbo Debugger (TD). TD offers
debugging capabilities that the TC Integrated Development Environment
doesn't, and rivals Microsoft's Codeview. My personal opinion is
that both extras in the Professional package are worth the extra
bucks.

Turbo C Professional includes the Turbo Debugger and Turbo Assembler.
This constitutes 4 extra diskettes, and two extra manuals. To the best of
my knowledge, the C disks and manuals (6 disks, 3 manuals) are conserved
between the two packages.

Turbo C Professional == Turbo C 2.0 + Turbo Debugger + Turbo Assembler

If you're going to be doing heavy work on big projects, or plan to do
low-level systems work, I'd splurge for the Professional. Otherwise,
it's a tossup. I have Pro, and I use the Debugger once in a while; it's
saved some projects that I had given up for dead, so I think it's worth
it. Depends on what you'll be doing. It's also nice to have an
assembler around once in a while.

Both are good prices. The C compiler is identical. The professional
package includes a first rate assembly level debugger in addition to the
debugger supplied as a standard part of tc2.0. Also Borland's assembler
is included. I rarely use anything but TC's debugger and have not yet
done the work with the assembler which I expected ... Ah well, I have
kids to occupy my extra time and they take precedence over assembling.

The professional gives you 5 books where the vannila gives you 2. The
professional gives you an assembler with tools and a C to assembly
interface. The docs are very good.
