[comp.lang.c] Request for recommendations for C++

I had two books available when I started learning C++.  One was the
Strousup book; the other was published by the Howard W. Sams Co.  The
latter was quite inferior, lacked examples, and seemed more of an
advertisement for the other books in their series.  I actually read
these books to produce code for the Connection Machine rather than
straight C++, so I can't recommend any compilers.
