Steve Morse, Rod Morgenstein, and Jerry Peek played Wolfgang's in
San Francisco Friday night.  I thought I'd pass along my impressions,
as I understand it's early in the tour.

They opened with "On the Pipe", an apparent ode to freebasing that the
Dregs played on their Industry Standard tour.  Very hot right off the
top.  It was even better than the version on the new Morse LP.  There
followed another new, previously untoured piece from the album, and then
some Dregs material.  This involved a trio playing songs composed for a
five piece band.  On "Pride o'the Farm", they pulled it off very nicely,
with Morse managing to play on his guitar both the guitar and the violin 
lines simultaneously(!).  "Night Meets Light", "What If", and "Ice Cakes" 
did not fare as well.  I mean, Morse and Peek played phenomenally, but some 
passages just don't make sense in isolation.

I recall only two accoustic numbers, a Bach piece ("Jesu, Joy of Man's
Desiring", I think) and an open tuned requiem for a fellow picker called "Tio".

On one new tune, "The Whistle", Rod payed keyboards and left the drums to a
droid or tape (I couldn't see), and it really did help to fill out the sound.

Andy West showed up and played bass on the first encore, "Cruise Control"!
It was interesting to be able to directly compare his and Peek's styles.
Andy is more solid and energetic, Peek more lyrical.

It's heartbreaking to hear only 4/5 of the Dregs tunes, but it was an 
excellent show and I'd recommend the tour to anyone who doesn't *insist*
on having vocals with their jazz/rock/country/classical music.
