According to a widespread rumor, the Pulitzer Prize selection committee awarded the prize to Pynchon's "Gravity's Rainbow" (perhaps the only work of S.F. ever to be seriously considered). The board of directors which administers the Pulitzer awards, however, vetoed the selection on grounds of incomprahensabliliy and obscenity (neither charge being valid).
