I want to learn more about the character sets being used (or proposed for use) for non-English European languages. I know that there is at least one "code page" (I find that term odd) promulgated by ISO, and at least one in use by IBM. I don't know if there are more, and I also don't know which of these are seen as serious industry standards, and which get ignored or only used by one vendor. Any related information, for example, a description of the historical development of conflicting standards, that would be helpful in understanding the picture would also be nice. I understand there are also some representations for non-English characters that involve using sequences of 7-bit characters (e.g. brackets). I also understand that there are some more-than-8-bit character sets defined to support Asian and Eastern European languages, and I am interested in them to the extent of knowing their names and that they aren't 8-bit character sets. I would appreciate any references to appropriate literature describing things, especially if you can tell me where to obtain the literature. Please MAIL responses to me, and I will summarize to the net. Thanks! -- Topher Eliot Data General Corporation eliot@dg-rtp.dg.com 62 T. W.
