[comp.lang.c] Purchasing Turbo C++

mrice@caen.engin.umich.edu (Michael Rice) (09/20/90)

Hello. I would like to purchase Borland's Turbo C++. I have
heard there is an educational discount available for students.
Since I can't seem to find it at Campus stores, I was wondering
how to go about getting this discount. I would appreciate any
help you can give in this area.

Thanks,
		Mike

If it is the same as the past Borland educational discounts, you'll
have to contact Borland directly. Also with past discounts, you had to
prove that you are using the product in conjunction with a class.

Borland is running a $149 deal for the Turbo C++ Pro package for
owners of any other C or C++ compiler (time to dig up my old
Datalight, while I wait for my Zortech Developers package to come).

Call Borland, the number I have is 1-800-331-0877. Ask to talk to someone
about software for educational institutions. They'll probably tell you what
you have to do. One company I tried said you had to have a professor write
a letter to Borland that says you're one of his/her students, then Borland
would send you a coupon good for the eductational price of the software. I
never went through with it, and the reason escapes me.

One way of getting the Discount proce for TC++ is to have the order mailed
to Borland on your school's letterhead. I got this direct from the horse's
mouth when getting pricings from the order department of Borland.

Actually, Borland's "Student Discount" isn't all that great of a deal.
I've seen TC++ priced at around $140-$150 from the mail order places, which
is just about the same price Borland is offering, maybe a _little_ higher.

FYI, I just called the above 800 number (evidently Borland's order number) and
asked about software for educational institutions. The person at the other end
of the line took my name and address to send me complete information on
Borland's educational software discount program.

I didn't ask about student rates, but I did find out about staff/faculty
ordering instructions, as I am a staff member here, in addition to being a
part-time student.

For faculty and staff, you need to send your order in on departmental/university
letterhead in order to qualify and you HAVE to place your order by mail, they
will not do educational discount orders by phone (they use the letterhead as
proof of the fact that you work for the educational institution in question)

When I get the pricing/total information for the educational discount program
sometime next week, I'll post another followup if people are interested. Please
send email to let me know if y'all are interested...

Send email to 'zortech-ed@proto.com' :-)

Zortech has a policy of giving educational discounts to people with '.edu'
addresses. No hassles with 'qualifying' for the discount. Get a faster
compiler that generates faster and smaller code, 800 x 600 super VGA
graphics support, email bug reporting, etc, etc.

$75.00 for the compiler, $200 for the developers edition (compiler, debugger,
source code to the libraries, toolkit class library, etc).

And *I* was under the impression you only had to convince them you
were a student. The software discount policies go, especially at
Borland, each of these policies may have been in effect one time or
another, or even all three at once!

I recall seeing postings by a guy who claimed to be in charge of
educational software sales for Borland. Forget his name, but he used
Portal, so you could probably get his mailing address from
cs@portal.com.
