Thanks to everyone who responded to my request for information on ANSI compilers available for Suns. Considering the forum, the responses I received can only be described as remarkable: everyone agreed. I received nine responses (considerably fewer than I expected, but apparently a single one would have sufficed.) Everyone who responded recommended the GNU C compiler (gcc). gcc can be obtained at no cost via FTP from prep.ai.mit.edu. It will compile on a wide variety of machines. Several people commented that the code it generates is on a par with Sun's bundled cc. The support is also very good and, according to at least one of those who responded, better than Sun's. I will continue to take e-mail on the subject if anyone out there would like to comment further on gcc or recommend something else. Also, I would appreciate comments on Saber (Sabre?) C or Metaware C from anyone with experience with those compilers. Once again, many thanks to all who responded. Bruce -------------------------------------------------------------------------- C.
