There have been a number of messages sent to this digest in the past month or more about the works of "Tolkein". I am beginning to wonder whether science fiction fans read hurriedly through everything, concerned only with content. True, a large number of recent messages were devoted to a discussion of "sf writers' style", but Tolkien's name has been consistently misspelled, leading me to believe that even the most devoted fans hardly look at the covers! I kept thinking that the next person who had something to SAY about Tolkien would surely point out that, despite all the praise, getting the author's name wrong suggests a lack of attention on the part of the reader. By the way, do you realize that we have a special mark in the language which is to be placed at the end of a question. It's called a "question mark", of all things. Most terminals have one. It looks like this: "?". On a more positive note, either I have grown more tolerant, or there HAS been an improvement in the writing of SF Lovers contributors over the past year. So for those of you who DO bother to reread your messages or run them through a spelling corrector before sending them, thank you: I, for one, appreciate your efforts. --carrie --------
