"Animal Farm" is a description of how communistic or socialistic ideals can decay into an oppressive situation remarkably similar to the conditions before the revolution. The overall tone of "Animal Farm" is less depressing (except at the end) because the main characters are animals rather than people. "1984" is a description of a possible result of many years under an overly authoritarian government. I don't associate "1984" with communism or socialism per se, although one of the tenets of "Animal Farm" is that these governments will always become harshly authoritarian. -- Tom Teixeira, Massachusetts Computer Corporation.
