[comp.lang.c] H&S III

steve@taumet.com (Stephen Clamage) (04/29/91)

Sam Harbison doesn't presently have direct access to net news, as he
explains below, and asked me to post this for him:
======================================================================

Thanks to everyone who has commented on H&S 3/e. As was suggested, I
am building an errata sheet which I will post on comp.lang.c--in
addition to sending hard-copy to those people with whom I have
corresponded. I'm waiting for some more comments, and expect to have
the sheet out in May. I am also sending some corrected pages to
Prentice Hall, and I expect them to incorporate the pages in the next
printing.

The number of typos is certainly embarrassing, and I take full
responsibility for them. Prentice did a good proofreading job, but I
made additional changes after that. [We'd never do that with a
software release, now would we?]

For the curious, the first two editions were produced using Scribe on
a DECSystem-20, but the 3rd edition was produced with Microsoft Word
on a Macintosh. The conversion was fairly painful, a lot of the text
got rewritten, and bugs were introduced. On the other hand, using
MS Word made possible a lot of the general improvements to the book's
look.

Anyhow, thanks for bearing with me. You can also send comments on the
book directly to me at the address below. I'm currently not connected
to comp.lang.c, and am relying on friends to forward relevant posts. I hope
to find time to install the news software on my workstation soon.
