[comp.lang.c] THANKS

ugwayne@sunybcs.UUCP (02/25/87)

This is just a note to say "Thank You" to all the people who responded to my
posting "Unbuffered I/O using Microsoft C 3.0". I tried to respond to each
person who answered individually but ran into difficulties with Unknown Paths
and the like. I really appreciated all the input and especially the actual
example code that some people mailed to make their point. This really helped.

A special thank you goes to both Tom Reingold and Tom May who actually
contributed working examples of the question that I had asked about.

Thanks a lot,

	It seems the mail is unanimous that the best books for programming
with Microsoft Windows are

	for an introduction,
		Programmer's Guide to Windows by Durant, Carlson and Yao
				published by Sybex

	for a reference,
		Programming Windows by Charles Petzold
				published by Microsoft Press

	I thank one and all who responded for this information. There were
some whom I could not mail my personal thank you letter. I hope they have
not felt under appreciated.

	My thanks to one and all who responded to my request for
information. The information was very helpful in getting me
started in the right direction for my project.

	Is the protocol on the network
	a) to thank answers to requests with a blanket posting,
		like this one,
	or
	b) is a thank you understood implicitly, and that
		postings such as this may clutter the newsgroup ?

Anyway, I HAD to send my letter of thanks.

Two days ago I posted a question about casting. Thank everyone and all
who responded. The following is what I found on my machine (VAX 3500
Ultrix V2.3):

Use the scientific notation, i.e. A = a0.a1...an E p0...pm.

(int)A casts to its integral part correctly only when n is less
than 16. So does function floor.

This result is based on code like

if( (int)A <= (int)B ) {
    statement1 ;
} else {
    statement2 ;
}

Thanks for those who mailed or posted the answer for the question I've asked
about printing a numerical form of a character.

Cheers

       I hate to write a generic thank-you but a number of people responded.
       As many guessed, my PATH was causing \dos\linker to be invoked.
       I did not know DOS came with a linker, and would never have guessed.
    What's it there for anyway ?
       Many wanted to know why I have V4.0 . I've been useing C for eight
    years (on VAX's) and have just bought a 386 for home. When one of our
    departments decided to toss out it's V4.0, I volunteered to do it for
    them :-) For being such a nice guy, they even tossed in the manuals.

  Thanks for everyones help. It was/is very much appreciated. I find
  computers are pretty frustrating when I can not program them.
