This is a request for information about Modula-2 compilers for VAX/VMS. I teach a second-year course in Data Stuctures and Algorithms, and am contemplating switching from Pascal to Modula-2 as the programming language. There are a number of good data structures books now which use Modula-2, and it provides a better way of talking about data abstraction. We have a Modula-2 implementation (I think from ETH), but it is reputed to be very slow and would probably kill the system if a large class tried to us it. So, I'm looking for something better. What other implementations are available? Contact addresses, prices and comments on experience with other compilers would be appreciated. Lindsay Groves

We have the Hamburg compiler (which is, I think, a port of the ETH PDP-11 original). It is not particularly slow. I don't know exactly who is supporting the Hamburg compiler now; seems to me I read something about Logitech doing it. RE: data structures books using Modula-2 - mine is just off the press (Prentice-Hall). I shouldn't really post a horn-blowing message to the newsgroup, but I couldn't figure out Lindsay Groves' address to send to him directly. Lindsay - if you'll write to me directly I can give you more info.
