[comp.lang.modula2] Macintosh M2 Compilers?

MFELDMAN@GWUVM.BITNET (Mike Feldman) (11/02/87)

I have used MacMETH from Modula Corporation with pretty good success.
This is a 1-pass compiler from ETHZ (hence MacMETH). Fast compilation,
good diagnostics integrated with a reasonable (almost Mac-like) editor,
etc. Only thing missing is PROCESSES. ETHZ seems to bbacking away from
processes.

I haven't measured the speed of object programs, but compile time is in
a league with Turbo Pascal. Interface to toolbox seems fine & complete,
though I haven't used it much myself.

The newest version (2.3) of MacMETH comes with a process-module

RE: latest version of MacMeth and process module. Thanks for the pointers.
I do't know why on earth Modcorp doesn't notify registered owners about
new versions. I will call them tomorrow s.

I talked to the folks at Modula Corp. today. They have version 2.1 of
MacMETH, and expect version 3.0 from ETH Zuerich some time soon.

The young lady advised me to send $12.50 for the upgrade from 2.0 to 2.1, but
I think that the charge may vary slightly depending on where you are (postage
or sales tax or ...) I suggest that you call them at 801-224-8999 before
sending money. (Besides, you can order by phone with a bank credit card.)

She also told me that she is at work entering the names and addresses of
customers into a computer, presumably so that they can send upgrade notices.

I don't know what to make of J|rgen N|rgaard's message about version 2.3.
Perhaps some versions of the software only got as far as the European
distributor (who is (was?) also a member of the project team at ETH), and
never made it to Modula Corp? If so, that would be unfortunate, both for
Modula Corp. and for its customers.

I was going to post a long article about the merits and demerits of MacMETH,
to supplement Dennis Cohen's comments on other M2 compilers for the Mac, but
at this point I might as well wait until I see how many of my intended
comments still apply to the latest softeware. (My article was to be based
upon version 2.0.)
