From: Peter Reiher <reiher@UCLA-CS> To my knowledge, no one other than Harrison Ford is repeating a role in the new Indiana Jones movie. In particular, Karen Allen is definitely not; there will be a different female co-star. Spielberg is directing, Lucas producing. I can't swear to it, but I think the screenplay is by the same husband and wife team who wrote "American Graffiti" for Lucas. (the Huycks ?) "Conan: Prince of Thieves" is due out this summer. I think Milius is directing it, again. "Streets of Fire" is due out some time in late winter or spring. It's a futuristic view of Los Angeles, where rock and roll and violent gangs rule the streets. It's being directed by Walter Hill ("48 Hrs", "Southern Comfort", "The Long Riders"), who specializes in action movies, and stars Diane Lane and Michael Pare. Last I heard, "Dune" is set for the summer after next. The next Star Trek movie will probably be out next Christmas. Disney has been working on an animated version of "The Black Cauldron" for years now; it must be nearly ready. "2010: Odyssey II" has been announced for Christmas. It's to be directed by Peter Hyams ("Capricorn I", "Star Chamber"). He's something of a hack, and he's definitely no Kubrick. Peter Reiher

I saw the trailer to Indy Jones.. NICE!!! The Lucasfilm people talked at the recent Baycon, and the things the showed were very impressive. The only person returning is Harrison Ford, and the script is by the American Graffitti people. On the Black Cauldron: Disney HAS been working on it for a number of years, on and off. This is a VERY difficult project that was the pet of Don Bluth for many years. With the level of competence in the disney Studio animation crew right now, my only hope is that they never finish it, because anything they do will be a travesty. Unofficially, Disney offered everyone at Bluth significant compensation and things to come back and finish Cauldron (and generally return to the fold) because they knew that the people they had couldn't. Nobody at Bluth took them up on the offer. If you want a graphic look at the difference between Disney studios and Bluth, go watch 'Fox and the Hound' and 'Secret of Nihm'. If you look at the quality of animation (ignoring the fact that Hound's story was butchered as well), you can see how poor Disney studio's animation has become. I should also point out that the first mickey mouse cartoon in 30 years (the highly advertised 'Mickey's Christmas Carol') is NOT a product of Disney Studio! They hired an outside company to animate it because it was cheaper than doing it inhouse (the new winnie the pooh was done the same way). As a long time fan of disney animation (and now a fan of Bluth animation) I can only feel sorry for the spirit of Walt. The studio that carries his name is not carrying on the traditions that he believed in, they are simply trying to cash in on his name. The REAL problem is that even Don Bluth, as good as he is, isn't a Walt Disney. I don't think animation will ever be quite the same... -- From the dungeons of the warlock: Chuqui the Plaid Note the new address: fortune!nsc!chuqui
